As you may already be aware, there has been an increasing number of cycle thefts in the Guildford area in recent months, and this has now started to spill over onto the University campus and the Research Park. The thieves appear to be targeting good quality cycles.
The security staff at the University are working closely with the police on advice for cyclists and the introduction of some new initiatives, as below.
The police advise that one of the best deterrents is to invest in a good quality lock and they recommend the use of hardened steel, D-shaped locks. They also advise owners to keep a note of the serial number, make and model of their bike which will assist in returning it to the owner if it is found. They suggest taking a photograph and keeping a note of any particular marks, scratches or stickers for identification purposes.
In conjunction with the police, the University are introducing a free cycle marking and registration session, and you are invited to have your cycle marked and registered at a session to be arranged on the University campus or the Research Park. Dates are currently being scheduled and are likely to be in early September – we will send out a further email with this information as soon as it is available.
If you are likely to be free to attend one of these sessions or wish to act on this advice immediately, you can register your cycles independently at Immobilise or Bike Register Both of these websites are checked by police forces nationally to trace owners of any recovered cycles.
If you are unfortunate enough to have your cycle stolen, please report this to the University Security Control team who are co-ordinating and recording all incidents. They will report this to the police on your behalf, and can be contacted on the telephone numbers below:
