The University of Surrey's Leadership Academy (http://www2.surrey.ac.uk/leadershipacademy/) is offering business leaders based in the Surrey Research Park the opportunity to take part in an Action Learning Set at no cost.

Action Learning is based on the simple principle of learning by doing. It provides members with a supportive, honest and open environment in which to explore current challenges being faced as a result of the recession. By tackling challenges in a group with like-minded peers and then agreeing actions to take away and complete, members can experience the powerful impact and results of Action Learning which have widely documented. Although there is a professional facilitator, the topics covered, learning and discussion which takes place involves the participation of all members.

The Leadership Academy has funding to provide the facilitation, venue and catering for an Action Learning Set containing 10 members. The Set will take place over 4 half days, every 3-4 weeks. An example of topics which could be explored are:

  • Maintaining sales during the recession
  • Finding ways of innovating to increase customer base during the recession
  • Exploring new markets and/or products
  • Effective leadership during the recession

Once interest has been registered, a meeting date will be set and the first session will be held - ideally by the end of February. I appreciate that taking 3-4 half days out of your business comes at a cost, so all sessions will take place on the Research Park meaning there is no travel involved.

If you are interested in joining an Action Learning Set with the common theme of leading effectively during the recession, please contact Bethany James at b.d.james@surrey.ac.uk or 01483 683495. Equally, please post a comment on this thread and I will check back regularly. This thread can also be used as a discussion board for any possible topics which you would like to explore.

  • Bethany this sounds absolutely fantastic and I would love to be able to attend but am concerned at the time that it would require of me away from my business. It will require some serious consideration and planning.

I will contact you directly but was wondering if we could use this page with comments (or perhaps you could create a topic in the forum section) in order to explore Set topics so that we firstly don't waste one of the days doing that and secondly, so we can explore topics and timings in advance in order to decide if and when we can or should attend? This way we can also openly share the discussion/planning.

As I say, I will contact you to discuss further but if you agree I can help you with the use of this tool.

    Best, Stephen

  • Thanks for the added input Bethany - much clearer to me now :) Now considering that the real value lies in the members that attend it will be very important to understand who those members are and the level of their commitment, notwithstanding the facilitators role in getting the best out of them. I'm hoping this forum will provide some insight into these aspects if we use it to openly discuss and judge responses beforehand.

The timing of end Feb, beginning March is also much better for me personally - hopeful for others too.

Finally, my input in terms of topics (your 4 options are all good) for the moment is:
    1. Improved collaboration (with partners, suppliers, customers, etc.) as a way of getting ahead or surviving?
    2. What sources of government support (or any other scheme) could or should be considered?
    3. Effective financial management during the recession
    4. Technology's role in improving competitiveness and productivity
